What is a Child Development Specialist?
Child Development Specialist
A child development specialist is an educator who is trained in identifying developmental and psychological disorders in children. They work one-on-one with children during the diagnosis phase of identification and counsel parents and caregivers on best practices for supporting their children's devleopment. A child devleopment specialist assists the parent/caregiver to identify the most important concern regarding their specific goal. They also collaborate with the parent/caregiver to create an individualized treatment plan that addresses the desired parenting goal. A child devleopment specialist monitors progress to ensure that the child is developing in a positive direction.
What We Do
At MJSCDS we offer a variety of tools, ideas, and practical support to assist the parents/caregivers with the implementation of the treatment plan in order to make positive changes to their parenting style and family context. We provide parents/caregivers with assistance to focus their attention on immediate behaviors, decision making and problem-solving skills.
Concerns Addressed but not limited to:
- Communication (Talk, follow directions)
- Play skills, focus, attention span
- Adaptive (eat, sleep, toilet train, dress)
- Gross/Fine Motor (sit, crawl, walk, scribble)

Evaluation Process
Identify Specific Concern
As parents we have many concerns regarding our children's devleopment. The evaluation process begins with an in-depth discussion of the expectations relative to child's age with a focus on the parent's specific concern regarding the child's limitations.
Observation and Assessment
We provide an In-person or telehealth observation of the child and parent/caregiver within their home environment. At MJSCDS we observe your child in their natural environment within the context of their daily routine. This observation helps to assess the child's overall skills set relative to expected milestones within their natural environment.
Personalized Treatment Plans
We understand that children are very different human beings with their own unique personalities, strengths and needs. Children are cared for by adult human beings who also have their own unique personalities, strengths and needs. The difference between adults and newborn children is that the adults have the life experience and responsibility to create the child's environment. At MJSCDS we can provide you with a treatment plan tailored made to address your concern, in order to achieve the desired goal. Plans are crafted with an emphasis on these differences in order to assure follow through and success.
